Where are your treasures?

 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". Matt. 6: 19-21 NKJV

  

There are two types of treasures- temporal and eternal treasures. These treasures are not classified based on their qualities or value but rather based on their storage facilities. In one of the many lessons of our Master, he says ‘do not lay up treasures on the earth but rather lay it up in heaven, where you can be sure that your treasures are secure’. So, it’s where you keep these treasures that will determine their worth and posterity and not necessarily what these treasures are. Let us consider time as a treasure (I hope you know time is priceless). After giving a good chunk of our time to our vocations, we spread what is left on social media, football for men, DSTV for women, and taking care of ourselves. By God’s standard, we have not made a worthy investment because none of these activities have eternal relevance... not even our jobs.

 

How much of your time do you spend studying the Word, preparing yourself as a vessel unto honour, who ought to be fit for the Master’s use? How much time do you spend praying for the furtherance of the gospel around the world? How much of your time do you spend sharing the love of Christ with the lost? Now, that’s how you can lay up treasures in heaven.  

Let’s make no mistake about it. The Word of God does not contradict itself; God is not opposed to our being blessed in houses, lands and finances.
However, when these things or the quest for them stop us from laying up treasures that can never be destroyed, then we have short changed ourselves. This often happens when they begin to occupy our hearts more than the pursuit of the things of God. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
 Relocate your treasures; move them up to Heaven!

Lord, please give me the grace to set my heart on things that are of eternal relevance.
