"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its
flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be
thrown out and trampled underfoot by men (Matt. 5:13 NKJV)
The adjectives used in Scriptures to describe us as
children of God are so profound and instructive that they leave us with
no excuse for carelessness. We are the salt of the earth. Salt is commonly
known and used as seasoning to enhance the taste of food but there
are other more important uses of salt.
The use of salt as a preservative dates back to the days
when there was no electricity. Medical science says that salt helps to
control fluid balance and the functioning of the nerves and muscles.
Salt is used to control friction during winter by melting the ice and
also keep it from forming easily.
Ok, today’s message is not to tell us about the usefulness
of salt but it’s just to better understand the dimension we are
expected to function as salt.
Looking at salt for enhancing taste, are we really living
up to that function as Christians? The only way we can enhance the taste
of this world is through love. We must be the ambassadors of the
boundless love of Christ.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all
mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I
could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (1
Corinthians 13:1-2 NKJV)
Without love, we are nothing and therefore tasteless! And
the Bible says that if the salt is no longer showing the attributes that
it is celebrated for, then it is no longer useful and will then be
thrown away. The love of God is what makes Christians different from
every other people.
We must enhance the taste of the world by loving sinners to
Christ; by showing compassion, by being a support system for the needy.
Action Point
Start loving the lost to the Lord!
