To share the love of Christ Jesus and help the lost find their way Home...

Salt of the earth

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men (Matt. 5:13 NKJV)

The adjectives used in Scriptures to describe us as children of God are so profound and instructive that they leave us with no excuse for carelessness. We are the salt of the earth. Salt is commonly known and  used as seasoning  to enhance the taste of food but there are other more important uses of salt.

The use of salt as a preservative dates back to the days when there was no electricity. Medical science says that salt helps to control fluid balance and the functioning of the nerves and muscles. Salt is used to control friction during winter by melting the ice and also keep it from forming easily.

Ok, today’s  message is not to tell us about the usefulness of salt but it’s just to better understand the dimension we are expected to function as salt.
Looking at salt for enhancing taste, are we really living up to that function as Christians? The only way we can enhance the taste of this world is through love. We must be the ambassadors of the boundless love of Christ.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-2 NKJV)

Without love, we are nothing and therefore tasteless! And the Bible says that if the salt is no longer showing the attributes that it is celebrated for, then it is no longer useful and will then be thrown away.  The love of God is what makes Christians different from every other people.
We must enhance the taste of the world by loving sinners to Christ; by showing compassion, by being a support system for the needy.

Identity Consciousness (Conclusion)

It is who we are in the time of trials that best define the depth of our faith in God. The decisions we take at such times will be reflections of the depth of our relationship with God and also, our confessions will help to tell the world, who we truly believe in.
No matter what life presents, holding on to our faith in God and holding on to our identity as Christians is a sure path to victory.

Moses was another man who understood the importance of identity. He had the option of enjoying the luxury of the king’s daughter’s house but that did not mean as much to him as his true identity. He saw the suffering and hardship in the camp of the Israelites but he knew that that couldn’t change their true identity. He preferred to suffer the persecutions that his people suffered, so that he will also partake of the revelation of the glory of God in their lives.

By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:24-27.

We have come to the end of the series on identity consciousness. We looked at some great Bible characters who either made a mark by being conscious of their identities or ruined their lives by being careless.

In the context of our study, identity transcends family and educational background, ethnicity,  nationality or financial status. It's based on who we are in Christ. When we know and understand this, we can never be caught in any compromise not to mention failing.
Sadly though, we often pay more attention to our physical identities, forgetting that the spiritual controls the physical.
In case you are asking what the big deal is, take a closer look at all those who failed and you would see that it was always at the point where they stopped paying attention to their spiritual identities. When Daniel turned down the king's offer, it was because he was thinking about himself in the light of God's covenant although he was a slave by  physical standards.
Samson failed because he dwelt more on his physical attribute of strength, which was only a product of his spiritual endowment.

Seek to know and guard your divine identity. It is crucial to your living a victorious life.

Identity Consciousness (Solomon)

"So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the LORD God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not keep what the LORD had commanded." 1 Kings 11:9-10 NKJV

Solomon was another person who paid dearly for not knowing who he was. Being conscious of our identity is so important that if you make light of it, it can mess up everything else. Imagine that in spite of Solomon's wisdom, he still fell. Just the same way Samson fell in spite of his strength and anointing.
What business did a man who God appeared twice to, have with building altars for Chemosh, the god of the Moabites, Ashoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians and for the gods of all his foreign wives? These were idols of nations from which God warned His children not to marry. God also warned him specifically about going after other gods. Of course God was talking about these foreign women and how they'll influence him if he's not careful.

So, what really happened to Solomon? Did he forget what God said? No! He didn't forget what God said but he forgot who he became after God appeared to him- God's oracle! Well, or maybe he didn't but couldn't just care more.😣
Hey! it's possible that he even thought he'd secured God's love for life and there was nothing he could do to offend God.😎
It's the same way some of us think we have secured so much of God's love to the point that He'd look away from our carelessness. It only takes one little act of carelessness to open the door for the enemy and if we are not careful....hmm!
I don't think Solomon set out to disobey God but anytime we let down our guards, the devil strikes.

We can see the consequences of his actions in 1 Kings 11:31-43.

Prayer

Lord, may my knowledge of who I am translate to the fear of You.

Identity Consciousness (Samson)

So the Angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.” Judges 13:13-14

Samson, a man of valour and unusual anointing, lost his life to being careless with his identity. The Scripture above was the instruction God gave Samson's mother at his conception. He was not an ordinary man in any sense. If God could be asking his mother to avoid any form of defilement during her pregnancy, then you can agree that he carried God's presence.

Delilah would not have succeeded in deceiving Samson, if she had not met him at the point when he had broken his covenant birth right. When a man forgets his true identity as a child of God, just anything can happen to him.
Samson's mother was not to eat anything unclean, yet he eat honey from the carcass of a lion and patronise a prostitute. (Judges 16:1-3)

Samson's strength had long left him before Delilah took off his locks. That was only the physical manifestation of it. Otherwise, how could anyone been as foolish as to keep getting closer to his own death in such simple and undisguised noose? (Judges 16:4-20)

That is usually what happens when we forget who we are. It's important to guard your identity as a Christian diligently. There are things you just can't do!

Prayer point

Lord please help me to understand and uphold Your purpose and identity for my life.

Identity Consciousness (Joseph)

So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her. (Gen. 39:10 NKJV)

Today, we'll take our study of identity consciousnes from Joseph's example.
Joseph’s brothers sold him to slavery believing that that would put an end to his ‘dreaming’.   Truth is, when God makes you a promise, it does not matter what the devil may plot against you. The more the devil complicates his plot, the more he helps facilitate your breakthrough but that is only if you keep holding on to your identity as a child of God. Joseph went from the Ishmeelites to the house of Pharaoh’s  Security Chief. The Bible tells us that the Lord was with Joseph and prospered all that his hands found to do.

So, in spite of being a slave, Joseph had the honour of being the over-seer in Potiphar’s house. He was steadfast, diligently going about his duties. It was that diligence and aptitude that drew Potiphar’s wife to him. There was also the part of the glory of God upon his life (God’s glory makes us attractive and draws people to us).

This must have been a tough temptation for Joseph, given the excuses I hear men make when they are posed with such situations- it is our nature, you can’t blame or control nature. For Joseph, he was able to put off the fires of such evil nature because he upheld his identity as a child of God higher than the pleasures Potiphar’s wife had to offer him. Some other young men would have jumped at Potiphar’s wife’s advances because it would have meant double honour for them; being equal with their master. Genesis 39:7-13.

Joseph never wanted to sin against God even though he would have been able to justify that by saying- “where was God when I was sold into slavery?” as we often justify our sins when we are going through trying times. Although the evil woman maliciously lied against Joseph and he was thrown into prison, that did not make Joseph deny God. And the promise of God about rewarding us when we do not cast away our confidence was greatly fulfilled in Joseph’s life.

Do not throw away your identity and heritage; nothing is of more value. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Mark 8:36 The Bible records how God blessed Joseph and restored all those years that he seemed to have lost.

Prayer

Lord, I pray for the grace to never forget who I am in You.

Identity Consciousness (Esua)

…lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears (Hebrews 12:16-17 NKJV)

Today on the subject of identity consciousness, we’ll look at the case of Esau and his birthright. Esau never took his identity as the first son  seriously. If Isaac was a king, then Esau ought to have been the heir apparent; the next king after his father, yet he blew all that away over a plate of pottage.
The act of trading our identity is likened to profanity in Hebrews 12:16 where the Bible referred to Esau as a profane person. That is, someone who lacks respect for God and the things that are Holy. The Bible further compared such a person to a fornicator.

When we trade our rights for temporal wealth and riches, the same thing that happened to Esau will happen to us. So many times we are so focused on the hunger and thirst for ‘one morsel’ of food that we miss the bigger picture. Some make ungodly compromises over things that are transient, forgetting that God can give us those things beyond measure.
Esau got the food and also got the satisfaction for the moment but that was at a cost which he never finished paying.
We know how difficult it was for Esau to get any blessings from his father Isaac. The Bible says that he sought his father’s blessings diligently with tears. Was it difficult for the father to speak again, after all it was mere words that he spoke to bless Jacob? No, but a spiritual bargain had been sealed even before those words came forth.
In the same way, when we submit to certain covenants and compromises, we make the Word of God and prophecies to have no effect in our lives.
Esau paid dearly for that act of carelessness or foolishness if you like.
He didn’t think there was a big deal to being the first son but Jacob knew better.

Prayer Point Lord, please take away from me every spirit of carelessness and desires for things that do not have eternal value.

Identity Consciousness (Daniel)

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the eunuch’s that he might not defile himself. (Daniel 1: 8 NKJV)

If we must live a victorious Christian life, then it is important for us to not only know who we are in Christ but to be conscious of it. When we are conscious of our identity, there are places we cannot go to, there are companies we’ll not keep and there are things that cannot even happen around us.

Daniel was one of the captives from Judah who were to serve in King Nebuchadnezzar’s palace. As part of the preparation to serve in the palace, Daniel was appointed special meals, drinks and maybe clothing.
We all know that it is a great privilege amongst slaves to be one of the king’s servants but Daniel knew better than to trade his identity for the king’s esteemed office. He may be a slave in Babylon but that couldn’t change his true identity as a royal priesthood.
Daniel was so determined not to defile himself with the king’s delicacies that when he made the first appeal to the Eunuch and he denied him consent; he had to talk to the steward.
It was just food and drinks. It shouldn’t have been a big deal, right? How could a slave have been so FULL of himself? Daniel knew he was the temple of the Holy Spirit and therefore could not condone any form of defilement (1 Corin. 3:17).

How many times do we go out of our way to protect and preserve our identities as Christians?
Nobody was looking and nobody could have cared if Daniel ate the king’s food or not. His Pastors and co-workers in Church were not there to criticise him but he knew that God was there and only that mattered to him.
No matter how clean a glass of water is, if you dip a needle in dung and let only the tip of the needle touch the water, you and I will not drink that water again. Don’t permit any form of contamination, no matter how small.
It was all of these that prompted God to show Himself in their cases as much as He did. Hold on to your identity, it brings down His glory and deliverance.

If you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, then you must be far from defilement! Be conscious of who you are!

Prayer Point

Lord, please help me to be conscious of the fact that I am Your ambassador and give me the grace not to fail You.

Love is the seeker

As we round up in this short series, it’s important to consider the all important navigator- love. The question of what treasures to seek, where to store the treasures and ultimately what goals to pursue, all have their answers in love.

When we love the Lord with all our heart (Matt. 22:37), there’s no way we’ll find fulfillment going after any other thing other than the righteousness of His Kingdom. Love will compel us to give our resources without murmuring; our time without being pushed. Love is what sets us on the go for the promotion of the Kingdom of God. Without a genuine heart of love, going out for the lost will be burdensome; evangelism will be stale. Love is so..o important because it’s the one thing that enables us to seek God and the interests of His Kingdom FIRST!

It was this kind of love that made David sacrifice water to God, in spite of his own thirst. Each time I read that story, it just humbles me.
So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD. (2 Samuel 23:16 NKJV)

David realized that the water that was fetched for him to drink had become more than just water. Three men risked their lives to fetch it. They took that risk because they wanted to please him and most importantly to help quench his thirst. Yet, David poured the water out to God. That’s just how love compels you. God takes His rightful place when we give Him our hearts in love. It becomes natural to put His purpose first. Did God have need for that water? No! What happened to David was that his love for God had given birth to reverence and preference.
You can’t have a successful Christian life without loving the Lord; you’ll soon tire yourself out.

Lord, I want to love you as I ought. Please transform my heart by Your Spirit

And all these things shall be added...

The experience of Peter and his co-fishermen in Luke 5 is a practical illustration of the message we considered some days ago- seeking first the Kingdom and having every other thing added  (Matt. 6:33).
and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. (Luke 5: 2 NKJV)
Peter and his friends had done all they knew to do without any success, so decided to wash their nets, shutdown and go home. Their boats were idle. It couldn’t matter much if they used it or anyone else. Yet, when the Master used Peter’s idle boat for just a few hours of preaching the Word, Peter encountered a bustling-bursting-breakthrough! Peter was no doubt a skilled fisherman, so when he says we have toiled all night and yet caught nothing, it wasn’t because he didn’t know what to do. They had done their best!
If God can reward the use of an idle boat (or service that was rendered out of convenience), is it our willingness to give our time and resources that He’ll not reward? Child of God, let us take God by His Word. Like Peter, some of us have been toiling all year round, running after contacts that we believe will bring our breakthrough without any success. In fact, some of us have even started washing our nets in frustration and hopelessness.

Today, if you can trade in your boat (time, wealth, talents) for His service, He’ll show you exactly where to launch in for that great catch, causing every other thing to be added to you.
But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. (Luke 5:5-6 NKJV).

Lord, please give me the grace to embrace the wisdom that adds every other thing.

Where is your heart?

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:21 NKJV

Yesterday, we touched a little on the verse of Scripture above but there’s still so much to draw from it. I would have put it this way- where your heart is, there your treasure will be also. My reason would be because we tend to lavish care (usually consisting of our treasures) on the things or persons that we love (where our heart is).
Huh! That’s not what the Wisdom of God says. Our treasures have the power to pull our hearts around.
Our hearts decide what we call treasures and once that decision is made, it goes wherever the treasures are. Know this, that our heart can only make the right decision as regards what to treasure and where to store them only by the Spirit of God. And that is a product of a healthy relation with God (that’s the subject for another day).
Let me make a little more effort at explaining ‘heart following treasure’.  Imagine that someone bequeaths $10m to you in these good times but says it can only be accessible to you through one of the not-so-reputable mushroom banks. Well, you may not like Bank 4-1-10 but they have your $10m. If there’s anything you can do to help keep them afloat, you are sure to do, because of your inheritance. It won't be strange if you are found praising them, trying to make people see that they are really not ‘as bad as you think’.
In the same way friend, when we start keeping our treasures (wealth, virtues, talents, energy, time) here on earth, before long, we’ll start pursuing the interests of the world, making excuses for the evil in the world and compromising our standards. And soon, this place will begin to feel like Home to us.
To conclude, can I say, “relocate your heart”? 😊 Don't allow temporal wealth to steer you away from eternal glory.
Prayer Point
Lord, please give me the grace to set my heart on things that are of eternal worth.

Where are your treasures?

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". Matt. 6: 19-21 NKJV

There are two types of treasures- temporal and eternal treasures. These treasures are not classified based on their qualities or value but rather based on their storage facilities. In one of the many lessons of our Master, he says ‘do not lay up treasures on the earth but rather lay it up in heaven, where you can be sure that your treasures are secure’. So, it’s where you keep these treasures that will determine their worth and posterity and not necessarily what these treasures are. Let us consider time as a treasure (I hope you know time is priceless). After giving a good chunk of our time to our vocations, we spread what is left on social media, football for men, DSTV for women, and taking care of ourselves. By God’s standard, we have not made a worthy investment because none of these activities have eternal relevance... not even our jobs.

How much of your time do you spend studying the Word, preparing yourself as a vessel unto honour, who ought to be fit for the Master’s use? How much time do you spend praying for the furtherance of the gospel around the world? How much of your time do you spend sharing the love of Christ with the lost? Now, that’s how you can lay up treasures in heaven.
Let’s make no mistake about it. The Word of God does not contradict itself; God is not opposed to our being blessed in houses, lands and finances.
However, when these things or the quest for them stop us from laying up treasures that can never be destroyed, then we have short changed ourselves. This often happens when they begin to occupy our hearts more than the pursuit of the things of God. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Relocate your treasures; move them up to Heaven!

Lord, please give me the grace to set my heart on things that are of eternal relevance.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matt.6: 33 NKJV

This verse of Scripture is one very popular verse that we often use while talking to unbelievers about the need to embrace Christ. We sometimes make it look like it’s only about giving our lives to Christ and afterwards, we stop seeking.
The admonition to seek the Kingdom of God first came as a conclusion to the message that Jesus gave in Matt. 6 about finding and keeping treasures. We have established that treasures are defined by how and where they are kept or stored and not necessarily by what they are.

Here, God is not just talking about laying up our treasures in heaven but for us to ensure that when we go out to gather these treasures, we must first secure such treasures that can be stored in heaven. Yes, because there are some of our treasures that have no eternal relevance.
Matt. 6:33 is therefore a call to service and undivided commitment to the things of God. It’s prioritizing every Kingdom agenda. When you need to buy an SUV that costs about NGN8m and you first think of the  missionary who needs a motorbike in order to reach the unreached and you lower your choice in a bid to accommodate that need, you have actually responded to the charge. Sometimes even, you can forfeit buying that your choice luxury car because the Lord has need of the money. You can cut down on the hours you put into your business or career, just so that you have more time to serve in Church.

…and all these things shall be added…God says if we can trust Him enough to put His heart beat first, then He’ll give us every other thing that we could ever ask for. One of the key reasons we still run after the things that ought to be running after us is faithlessness or what we call ‘fear of the unknown’. Let us reverse the order! Put God first and He’ll do the rest!

Prayer Point
Lord, please give me the grace to always put you first.

WHY WORRY?

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns;
yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? Matt. 6: 26-27

Yesterday,  we were able to establish that it's fear and faithlessness that inspires most of our unending pursuit for livelihood.
Fear, because we are not sure what tomorrow holds and faithlessness because, even when we know that God knows what tomorrow holds, we don't trust Him enough to believe that He has us covered.

I am one person that is a habitual worrier (if there's any word like that), when it comes to planning for tomorrow. But, do you know what, my best efforts adds up to nothing when you compare them to God's small interventions. There's nothing wrong in working hard and always making plans for tomorrow but it becomes wrong if our confidence for success is not based on God's abilities and promises. We tear ourselves thinking, worrying about tasks that are not ours to handle.

Look at the birds of the air....

Well, before you say "am I a bird?", God is saying - "if I care so much for these ones, is it you that I created in My own image that I will not care for?
I have just begun a new journey of faith- of trusting more and tearing less and friend,  it works. I'm still learning though, taking it one step at a time.
I'd like you to join me. If divert all the energy we spend worrying about tomorrow to serving God, I'm sure we'll increase our productivity level.

Action Point
Identify those issues that you constantly worry about. Take them to God in faith and allow Him to take control.

HOW MANY MASTERS HAVE YOU?

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon". Matt. 6: 24

The Scripture above is taken from our Lord's teaching on purposeful living. When He says you cannot serve two masters, I expected His comparison to be God and the devil but instead He says God and mammon (the desire for wealth personified as an evil spirit).

A lot of us believe that we do not have anything to do with serving 'other gods', yet we are not only serving mammon but are being controlled by it. Our desire for wealth is seriously competing with God's place in our lives.
We lie and cheat just because we want to 'make it'.

Well, God desires to bless and make us prosperous. Wealth is one of the fringes of redemption but should never take away our attention from God.

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25

Apart from the wanton crave for money and material wealth, there's also the genuine pursuit of wealth in order to make ends meet.
God does not also approve the latter. That's why He says in the scripture above- why are you worrying yourselves for such small things? If I can give you life, why do you believe that taking care of you will be a big deal for Me?

Fear and faithlessness is one of the fundamental reasons we run after the things that should be running after us. Trust God. Serve Him and everything else will serve you.

My father's glass of water and my can of cold Malt

During my late father’s later days with us, he preached one message over and over again- “What is your glass of water?” The message was a product of the experience he had. He was to travel from Port Harcourt to Warri by the then NNPC owned Twin-Otter aircraft. Like with everything NNPC, the flight times were never consistent. They had all gotten used to this. Interestingly too, sometimes the flight even waited for them.

However, on this fateful day, while waiting in the lobby my father became thirsty and strode off to look for where to get a glass of water or possibly buy. I want to believe that along the way, he may have stopped to discuss some of the newspaper headlines for that day (He liked Nigerian news). He got back to the tarmac some minutes later and saw the flight taking off. He had been left behind! He told us how he ran after the plane trying to stop them but they didn’t stop and suddenly he realized that that was too much to ask for. He was surprised that none of his colleagues came out to look for him (there were no cell phones then).

He came back home that afternoon feeling very down, and said to us “I had a picture of rapture today”. He went on to say that the glass of water represents the attractions of the world, the desires of the flesh, our ambitions, lust  etc. So many times as Christians, we wait in the lobby of life and believing that we know the timing of the eternal Flight, we decide to go out in the world and meddle. At other times we are so sure that the Flight will wait for us because of the days we have put in to serving God, because of the fat offerings (or tips we usually give the Cabin Crew) we give in church. Some of us have even been deluded  to the point of believing that our Pastors (my father’s colleagues) will come and look for us if the Flight came.

In November 2012, I had a close brush at the same experience. I was waiting at the NAF base to board the 3.00pm flight to Bonny. At about 3.15p.m we were told that the flight will be delayed. With this information I went out to try and get a cold can of Malt drink. I took my time and even bought some biscuits with it. I came back some minutes later to find only my luggage staring at my me. The dispatchers at the front desk chorused, “Amara, you’ve been left behind”. I muttered ‘God forbid!’  (for me, that was a very heavy phrase as it reminds me only of rapture). They said, we mean the flight has left you. I tried to get defensive… “but you said the flight will be delayed”, they responded, “but we didn’t tell you for how long it would be”. Trying to save me from my misery, one of them said, “hurry up and join them for the briefing” and as I picked my bags to go, another said… “but that is how rapture will be...o!”

All through the flight to Bonny, I kept thinking about my cold can of Malt and my late father’s glass of water.

What is it that you have stepped out to buy? Is it water or Malt? Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. (1 Thess. 5:1-4 NIV). Please don’t stay too long in the market because you do not know when the Flight will leave.

I press forward

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
